Tempe-based ArmorWorks , which makes protective armor products, has signed a $30 million contract with the U.S. Army to provide armored panels for Humvees being used by troops in Iraq.

The order calls for 1,500 Ballistic Advantage Armor Kits by the end of this year. These kits are designed to withstand roadside bombs, land mines, machine guns and assault rifles.

The company said the new contract will result in the need to double staffing levels by another 100 employees. ArmorWorks will also need to double its work space to 80,000 square feet, officials added.
